“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.” Matthew 13:44

Have you ever had those moments where you wonder if following Jesus is worth it? When your friends and family doubt, when you look at your bank account, when you make summer plans, when you think about your next career move, you may start to weigh the cost.

When we decide to follow Jesus, we put him on the throne of our hearts and captain of our lives, allowing him to guide us no matter what. There is a cost in following Jesus, and the cost is laying down the rights to your own life. Many looking in at Christianity think we’re crazy. Why do we give things up to know a God we can’t see? Why do we follow him even when it’s hard?

Because there is unearthly joy when you give up your life. The stress and weight of your life on your own shoulders was not meant for you to bear. It leads to our death, spiritually and physically. So there is joy in giving it up. Maybe you are just beginning this journey, maybe you have yet to experience the joy of giving it all up to follow him. Maybe you have been walking with him for years, and feel that you have given him all you have. Maybe you feel done, worn out. May this week be a time you explore what God is asking you to give up to follow him. It is a journey well worth the cost.
