In a regular basement, in a regular house, away from campus life in a sleepy suburb in Moscow, Idaho, music is blaring within the boundaries of decibel restrictions for a residential neighborhood.

Though college, or even adult life, doesn't always allow a lot of time for the pursuit of musical hobbies, Resonate Jam Sessions give students and community members an opportunity to share their gifts and love of worship in a casual environment.

At a Jam Session, you can find a variety of instruments that make up a typical worship band: drums, electric and acoustic guitars, bass, keyboard, and a couple of vocalists. Many members of the Resonate worship band are also present, surrounded by a group of new potential band members who play the same instrument.

Kristen O’Neill, Juan Cuevas, Jason Oliveira, and Tiffany Dobos, all regular band members, joyfully help first time attenders understand the general feel of the songs. Crystal Oliva, who brought her violin for the first time, enjoys the fun, laid back environment of Jam Session, where everyone is welcome regardless of skill level or instrument.

Kyle Worsham, Resonate’s Music Coordinator, loves to offer encouragement and visual cues to keep everyone in time. His motto: “If you’re going to mess up, mess up big!” Side hugs and applause are also a part of Kyle’s inspiration as he makes his way around to different people in the room.

Jason Oliveira has been with the worship band for several years as a drummer, and has been especially encouraged to see these monthly Jam Sessions grow from a gathering of about five people, to sometimes twenty or more musicians. There’s something about trying out new songs together that puts first-timers at ease.

The sweetest part of these nights, however, is giving people the opportunity to use their musical talents for the glory of God. Jam Sessions are a symphony of instruments, tuning themselves solely to serve to the King.

People all have different giftings and strengths, and Jam Sessions are a great place to refine and explore, offering praise to the One who created it all.

Join us on the first Monday night of each month for our Jam Sessions.
