Psalm 103

Psalm 103, Revelation 4:8-11

When I was little I used to pick dandelions, thinking they were flowers, and present them to my mom. She would put them in a special little jar the size of a thumb filled with water and set it on the windowsill above the kitchen sink. I was always so proud of the flower I was able to give to my mom and devastated when it disappeared a few days later. My mom told me that the flowers don’t live forever. So I would pick a few flowers a week to keep the little jar filled. I wished for a flower that could last forever.

There will never be a flower that lasts forever and like verse 15 and 16 state, we are like grass or a flower and will wither away. There will come a day when no one remembers our face or name. “But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, and His righteousness to children’s children…” (vs. 17). Only God is forever and through His Son Jesus, we can have eternal life with Him. Our time on earth will end and we will fade away, but God’s love will remain.

In this Psalm, David is blessing the Lord for all that He does and all that He is. In David’s humility he recognizes his life to be fleeting and God’s vastness. He is praising God for His unending love and unique and all powerful qualities that will never fade away. He recognizes God to be a sovereign King over all that he knows. This is something that as believers we will be very keen to in moments and forget in other moments. Let this Psalm remind us of God’s faithfulness, power, and steadfast love. There are many who don’t believe this whatsoever, but the Bible is clear that there will be a day when at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow… and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:10-11).

So may we be humbled to know that apart from God we are nothing. May we magnify His goodness and greatness. May we sing, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come” (Revelation 4:8).
