Exodus 24
Exodus 24, Jeremiah 31:31-34, Hebrews 8:4-13
A covenant is a universal agreement that extends and covers all those who believe in the one who created it. As believers, our covenant with God does not change based on our personal relationship with God (God’s word stands firm); it is everlasting and involves sacrifice. When we watch a marriage ceremony, specifically if it is within God’s design of marriage, we are choosing to join an ‘agreement’ under which others have also fallen. Their own personal relationship is still specific to them, but they are stepping into a covenant relationship that many others have done before them. They are choosing to sacrifice for their spouse, to lay their wants and needs down before the other, and the covenant they joined will not change.
We read a lot about a ‘new covenant’ in the New Testament. Previously, such as in Exodus 24, the covenant was read to Israel, and they verbally agreed. During this time, the covenant was to be satisfied with animal sacrifices and certain practices. But under the new covenant, the one satisfied through Jesus, the law, or animal sacrifices are no longer needed. Even in Jeremiah, he shares the new covenant to come. We see if fulfilled in Hebrews 8:4-13.
The new covenant is eternal because of the death of Jesus, an innocent and perfect man, and we can all find our source of life through Him. The new covenant is what we can step into today, believe in again today, and invest deeper and further into. It completely satisfies and, when chosen brings life.
Where do you need to embrace the truth of the new covenant? What is hard to believe?
