How We Get There

In God leading us to become a Church Planting Movement, we have had many years of doing things right and wrong but now have some helpful steps as to where we plant churches and why. Learn more below!

STEP 1

Identification

The North American Mission Board (NAMB) has identified 403 universities throughout the United States and Canada that are influential, and have a deep need for the Gospel. It was from these 403 universities that Resonate’s vision of planting 21 churches by 2021 in collegiate cities emerged. Once a city has been identified, the next step is to identify the lead church planting couple. Lead church planters are identified using four characteristics: character, competency, capacity, and calling. These are individuals who often have been identified early on in the Resonate Leadership Pipeline. Once a lead church planter has been identified, they will then begin to train and identify others within the Resonate Network who are on the Resonate Leadership Pipeline towards becoming a church planter

STEP 2

Building a
Core Team

As the lead church planter prepares spiritually to move to a new city, they are also preparing a core team of individuals to move with them as well. When building a core team, the goal is for approximately twenty-five individuals to commit to being a part of the core team. These are individuals who have been identified along the Resonate Leadership Pipeline and are praying towards moving with the church plant. Nine months before the team officially leaves, the lead church planter will begin having church planting interest meetings with the individuals who are prayerfully considering moving. The lead church planter will eventually make a personal ask inviting individuals to join the core team. These are individuals who exhibit attributes as a developed disciple-maker, a mobilized missionary, a healthy human, a culture keeper, and as a sacrificial servant. Once the ask has been made of them, the potential core team member will then sign a core team covenant, which is a contract stating their responsibilities for the coming year as a core team member.

STEP 3

Scouting

Once a campus has been identified, we gather teams of people to take trips to university cities to scout. Our trips typically happen in a window where staff and students can spend a week in the city and on the campus while school is still in session. While we are there we focus on gathering two essential perspectives; data, and connections. We want to understand the story of the university, the rhythms of the student, the spiritual climate of the campus, what organizations have impact, how to reserve space, etc. Additionally, we want to meet people. We are looking for Gatekeepers and People of Peace; those who will give us access to the campus, students groups, and pray for God to lead us to people where he is already working. We stay in a house or local church near campus and spend the week gathering those things and exploring the city to become familiar.

STEP 4

Resources & Approval

Because Resonate plants churches in collegiate cities and on university campuses, the average amount of income that the congregation receives is less than a church filled with working professionals. While some of the resourcing for Resonate church plants comes from congregant’s tithes, Resonate also relies on funding from partners such as the North American Mission Board.

Because of this, every church planting couple is required to complete an assessment through the North American Mission Board prior to being sent in order to receive funding for the church plant that evaluates the spiritual, emotional, physical, and relational health of the couple. This ensures that they have the character, competency, capacity, and calling to lead a church plant. This assessment also allows for the couple to receive external affirmation, encouragement, and wisdom from experienced church planters outside of the Resonate Network.

In addition to receiving funding from partners outside of the Resonate Network, all Resonate staff members support raise for their paychecks so that all tithes and gifts towards Resonate church planting goes directly towards the development of the site rather than towards staff members. Support raising for staff paychecks allows the staff to share how the Lord is moving through Resonate Church to others outside of the Resonate Network, as well as to build a team of individuals supporting them not only financially, but also through prayer in their ministry.

STEP 5

Making the Move

Once funding and approval happen the team begins to look for housing. We typically set our eye on homes close to campus, with decently large gathering spaces in the main areas and backyards. Depending on the city, it is not always possible to find housing close to campus and much of our decision hinges on the way that students commute to campus or live in proximity to campus. Many of our church planting sites believe that it is important to live together. Single people, young professionals, and students will often have 5+ roommates, knowing that church planting can be lonely and it is more healthy to avoid isolation. Married couples will even invite others on the church planting team to live with them. Our teams are made up of young professionals who have graduated from college and chosen to get a job in a church planting to help with the plant, students who have transferred schools to finish their education as a church planter, church staff, and even families.

STEP 6

Launching

Once the core team and lead church planter has moved into the new collegiate city to start the Resonate church plant, the team will begin to meet and disciple students on the campus. Soon after, the core team will begin meeting in Villages to have an intentional community to invite others into, and then they will eventually begin to meet on campus or nearby campus after an official “Launch Sunday Gathering”.
