Exodus 7
Exodus 7
In 1969, Joe Namath of the New York Jets promised that his team would beat the Baltimore Colts in the Super Bowl that year. Promises of any kind can be hard to keep, especially when it comes to guaranteeing a Super Bowl victory. Well, it happened to come true, and the Jets beat the Colts 16-7. Namath predicted the win and led his team to bring his prediction to fruition. The prediction enlarged his legend and status as Super Bowl champion.
In chapter 7, God proves his power and delivers on his word. God tells us that Pharoah’s heart would harden (Exodus 4:21, Exodus 5:1-4), but that God would still bring his people out of slavery in Egypt. The passage begins by God telling Moses again that Pharoah will harden his heart and not let the Israelites go, but that ultimately God will lead his people out of Egypt and into the wilderness. The total narrative will take place over the next few chapters, but we see the engagement between Moses and Pharoah begins here.
The staff turning into the serpent and the Nile water turning into blood mark God's power and the proof of his promise here in chapter 7. The events on their own would have been a wonder for Pharaoh and all others to figure out how it occurred. But because God foretold these events and because Moses and Aaron shared that these events were done through God, it gave God glory. The events on their own were miraculous, but God’s promise of coming to life enlarged his legend and turned glory to himself. He began to show Pharaoh who the God of Israel was and that he was all-powerful.
God is all-powerful, all-knowing, and faithful to his word. He delivers his people and comes through on his promises. To see these truths about God displayed in this passage should develop awe, trust, and a desire to worship within our souls.
Joe Namath is a legend, but winning the Super Bowl doesn’t quite stack up to foretelling the deliverance of your people from slavery and then bringing it to fruition. This chapter helps us have reverence for God early on in the Bible and give him glory for how He has been moving since the beginning, looking after His people and delivering them according to His will.
Thank God for being an all-powerful promise keeper and a deliverer of His people.
