Introduction

Galatians 5:22-23, 1 John 15:1-5, Philippians 3:8

I love a good list. I don’t know about you, but as a rule follower through and through, when I see the fruit of the spirit my mind immediately thinks about how I can grow in patience or about how my gentleness could use some work. However, that’s not what Paul is pointing out in this passage. Most of the first believers and leaders in the early church were Jewish Christians. Their Jewish heritage constrained them to be strict followers of the law, and their new faith in Christ invited them to celebrate their freedom. They didn’t understand how a non-Jewish person could be part of the kingdom of God. Paul writes this letter, reminding the church that the Gospel is for everyone, the law isn’t what leads to salvation and that through the work of the Holy Spirit, we can all experience holy liberty.

The fruit of the spirit is the spontaneous work of the Holy Spirit inside of us. It is the Spirit who produces these traits in our hearts, reflecting the beautiful nature of Christ as we grow. The fruit of the spirit isn’t the byproduct of hard work or a Christian’s desire to be better, and we can’t obtain them by trying to get them without his help. John 15 paints the picture of a vine, and the branches could only grow fruit when connected to the vine. When we remain in Him, the fruit of the spirit shines collectively in our lives to reveal the surpassing worth of knowing Christ.

So how must we approach the fruit of the spirit? My advice would be this:

Allow them to lead you to worship.

The fruit of the spirit is a direct reflection of Christ’s characteristics. We have a heavenly father who is loving, joy-filled, and full of patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self-control. Our King isn’t a tyrant but a loving Father who cares for His children, and He has poured out His spirit on us as a helper and a guide. Rejoice in this truth, and give thanks to the Lord for His good gifts.

Connect yourself to the vine.

Deepen your understanding of God, get in His presence and center your heart on His ways. Jesus is the way, truth, and life; as we draw closer to the Lord, our hearts and perspectives will change to be more like His. As we draw closer to the Lord, the fruit of our life will begin to reflect our wonderful Savior.

Grow.

Just as a plant reaches for the sun, would our hearts reach for the truth? Saturate your mind with scripture. Repent to your huddle. Share the Gospel and create a life that is pleasing to the Lord. We may be dependent on God to produce fruit in our lives, but that doesn’t mean we passively sit around waiting for something to happen. Be obedient and take action to grow in your spiritual life.
