The Never Forsaken Covenant

Hosea 1:10-11, Genesis 15, Romans 8:12-17

We have talked a lot about covenant. Back in Genesis, God makes a promise. He promises Abraham that he will have as many children as the sand of the earth. Yesterday we saw God proclaim that we are not his people. Our sin offended and his wrath justly casts us out. But now we see God in his mercy declare that we will become children of the living God.

“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons [and daughters], by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!” (Romans 8:15) ONLY by God’s grace and grace alone are we reconciled to him as children of the Living God. Only. Did you see my bold, italics, and underline there? We have done NOTHING. It is Jesus who made a way. And it was the Father who had ordained hundreds of years before Jesus to make it so. God chose us despite our sin, despite our constant betrayal and unfaithfulness. He promised Abraham and promised that his people would once be called children. It is out of his character that those promises come true. We have seen that it is not our ability to keep the covenant but his ability to do so. God’s mercy and kindness have set us free from sin. Jesus’s power over death and sin has made way for us to be cleaned by his blood, that we may enter into the throne room as children.

Do you believe that? Really? Do you live out of your identity as a son or daughter of the Most High King? Where do you doubt? Surrender it to Jesus and ask for him to remind you of who he has made you be.
