The Flock of Jesus

John 10:22-42

The Pharisees are asking Jesus to tell them point blank if He is the Messiah. It appears that they are teeing up Jesus for the perfect gospel share, right?

Well, not really. This was not a genuine question. Jesus said, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me.” (John 10:25)

The Pharisees are trying to trip up Jesus and blame Him for their unbelief. Jesus points out that they have seen clear signs that He is the Messiah. It’s already plain to see. The Pharisees can’t blame Jesus' lack of clarity for their unbelief; the truth is clear.

So why don’t they believe? They are not a part of Jesus’ flock

Jesus’ flock is marked by three characteristics as stated by Jesus in verse 27.

  1. They listen to Jesus’ voice.

  2. Jesus knows them.

  3. They follow Jesus.

In contrast, when Jesus went back across the Jordan, “many people believed in Him” despite never seeing John perform miracles as a testament to Jesus’ claims. Unlike the Jewish leaders, they heard about what Jesus had done and trusted Him. Jesus’ revealed Himself clearly, and their hearts were open to receiving and following Him.

Why the difference in reaction? How could some people be so critical of Jesus after witnessing miracles and some people so willing to follow Him after simply hearing about Jesus from John.

To Jesus, it seems to come down to whether or not they are in his flock. In other words, whether they listen to Jesus, are known by Jesus, and follow Jesus.

If Jesus is indeed the Good Shepherd (John 10:11), are you a part of His flock? If you have made the decision to trust Him as the Savior, are you listening to His voice? Are you allowing yourself to be known by Him? Are you following His ways?

Jesus says that “My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one” (John 10:29-30).

We have a permanent place within the flock of Jesus that no one can take away. As you rest in the truth that your Shepherd will guide you, continue to listen, trust, and obey His voice.
