The Wedding Miracle
John 2:1-12
Take a moment to think about the last wedding you were at. How did you feel while you were there? Weddings are celebrations of love and commitment. They are moments to express gratitude to God and community. They are parties full of joy. They are an opportunity to hug old friends. We live in the moment, experiencing pleasure, lightness, and delight.
I imagine the guests at the wedding in Cana are experiencing the same thing until the wine goes dry. Running out of wine would have been considered an insult to the guests during this time. It reflected poorly on the groom’s hospitality, and the guests would have taken offense.
It is interesting to note that John is the only author who mentions this miracle in his Gospel account. Additionally, it might seem more trivial than the other issues Jesus addresses, such as raising a dead person or casting out demons. If Jesus did all these miraculous signs, why does John start with Jesus turning water into wine? Why is it so important to include this event in the narrative?
It shows Jesus’ power to transform.
And note what it says in verse 11, “ What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory and his disciples believed in him.”
Jesus did not transform the water into wine only to meet a need. He did it as a sign of his power and his glory.
This sign showed his disciples that he held the power to transform, and in response, his disciples believed.
Wine wasn’t the only thing that transformed that day; so did the disciples' hearts. This was no trivial miracle but a powerful sign that Jesus was the glorious Son of God.
When you read of Jesus' power to transform, what does it stir in your heart? If Jesus can change the essence of a physical thing, do you believe he can transform you?
Notice that all Jesus' disciples did was believe. All they did was trust in Him. It is the same for us; if we desire to see transformation, all we can do is put our trust in Him.
As a response today, take a moment to listen to “You Will Be Saved” by Elevation Rhythm. It is a powerful reminder of the transformation through trust in Jesus.
