1 Samuel 18

Saul gets worse with every chapter we read. Which makes you love David even more right? But let me help us remember - we are never the hero of the story. We all wish we could be like David who is so humble and exalts God in the midst of his suffering. I’ve walked through season’s of suffering, and I will be honest and say I didn’t respond like David. I did respond like Saul. How often do we get angry at our circumstances? How often do we look to friends with envy and covetous hearts? I mean Saul’s own children love, adore and knit their souls to David in friendship and in marriage.

Yet, the message of the story is not about doing better, its about who your life is about. God’s favor on Saul was revoked because of disobedience. Even in this story Saul is filled with rage and jealousy because of the songs the women are singing about David. Saul is after his own glory and hates anyone who tries to steal it. Isn’t this us too? Don’t we all love our own glory? Maybe your the self-deprecating kind of guy or gal, that still makes the story about you and not about God.

We must be a people who are obsessed with God’s glory rather than our own. If not, we will be just as miserable and angry as Saul. We were not built to exalt our selves but to exalt the only one who is actually worthy of all exalted praise - God. Church, where do you need to repent of self exaltation - whether that be your pride or your self depreciation. Where do you lack God exaltation in your life?

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31
