1 Samuel 26
David is caught in a similar situation as he was in Chapter 24. The opportunity to kill Saul and take the reign of Israel is before him. God has made Saul and his army fall into a deep sleep when David and his assistant Abishai walk in. With the spear lying next to Saul’s head, the same spear that Saul tried to use to kill David, David is met with the option to end Saul’s life.
David’s reaction is one that may be unexpected. He tells Abishai to not kill him, even with the way God had delivered them to that place (V8). So they take the spear and water jar away from the camp. This is where the story twists because Saul’s reaction is not one of anger or pride but of humility. Saul sees the spear that could have killed him and understands that David spared his life.
21 Then Saul said, “I have sinned. Return, my son David, for I will no more do you harm, because my life was precious in your eyes this day. Behold, I have acted foolishly, and have made a great mistake.” 22 And David answered and said, “Here is the spear, O king! Let one of the young men come over and take it. 23 The Lord rewards every man for his righteousness and his faithfulness, for the Lord gave you into my hand today, and I would not put out my hand against the Lord's anointed. 24 Behold, as your life was precious this day in my sight, so may my life be precious in the sight of the Lord, and may he deliver me out of all tribulation.”
Because of David’s decision, Saul’s heart experienced a great shift. This decision of obedience and boldness of David resulted in God’s glory extended! How often do we think that disobedience (in any circumstance) will bring more peace than that of what God can bring us? We saw God’s promises displayed in this situation - where have you seen God glorified through your story or life? Reflect how God took an unlikely and strange situation to further His promises!
