2 Samuel 2
Here is where David finally is anointed king. Although David started out as a shepherd boy, youngest of 8 sons, he rose to become a humble king appointed by God. As a boy he probably never imagined this outcome but probably never expected the trials that it took to get him there.
From his lowly shepherding days to getting sought out to be murdered by Saul, David has been through moments of fear, doubt, and trusting. There are Psalms that show his heart crying out to the Lord and asking Him for help that only He can provide and also so much praising even while David seemed to be near death. And through it all God was faithful. God protected David when he fought Goliath. He protected David when he was sought after by Saul. And in the right time he provided him with support from the right people and paved a way for him to become king.
This feels like such a relief after reading David’s journey from when he was introduced in 1 Samuel 16 and promised by God to be the anointed king (1 Samuel 16:1, 1 Samuel 16:12). Finally God is fulfilling that promise. God was with David through it all and David leaned into God for strength.
This could be the end. This could be where the author says, “and then David became the rightful king and everyone lived happily ever after…” But we all know things are never that simple. This is just a piece of the greater story. David was a piece in God’s overarching story of redemption before anyone even knew who David was and God will continue to walk with David through his life.
Oftentimes I forget the truth of God still walking alongside us even after I’ve reached a “goal.”
I get so caught up in asking God for help or for answers that when I finally reach the point in my journey, I thank God and then forget to spend deep quality time with Him until the next time I am in a rut. We’ve heard it said that even in the darkest times God is with us (Deuteronomy 31:6) but even in our rejoicing God is still with us and desires to hear from us and celebrate with us (Zephaniah 3:17, Psalm 92:1-2).
This wasn’t the happily ever after ending. This was a picture pointing to the future King that was to come. This was a fulfilled promise that God hadn’t left his people and never would! God would continue to keep his promise to bring a Savior and fulfill the law. God is continuing that promise even to us today! Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever!” God is always with us, in the highs and lows He will continue to satisfy our souls if we put our trust in Him!
When do you forget to communicate with God the most? In the lows? In the highs? Or in mundane?
