Sermon on the Mount: Matthew 6:1-4

Matthew 6:1-4

In biblical times, in whatever town you found yourself in you could enter into the streets of the town, the marketplace, or in front of the temple and they would be full. People were walking to and from destinations, stopping to buy or sell, or visiting the temple. There were plenty of people out and about, so picture that setting as you hear Jesus teach these next few verses.

Jesus starts off this section “Beware…”, this is important to pay attention to, Jesus wants the crowds full attention here. “...of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them.” While the text may be focused on the action here, Jesus is focused on the heart.

Let’s continue.

Jesus continues to make the point, we should be doing righteous deeds in public and sounding our trumpet for recognition. But he takes it a step further in verse 3, now to the private context of the audience's life. Do not let your left hand know that your right hand did a good deed. Again, the focus may be on the action here but Jesus is focused on the heart.

What is Jesus saying here? Take a minute to reflect on this scripture.

Jesus is focused on the heart. Do good deeds not for yourself, but for others and for the glory of God.

Where in your life are you seeking recognition? In what areas of your service and deeds are you desiring to be seen? Surrender this to the Lord and continue to do good for His glory.
