Genesis 8-9
Today’s reading is a monumental moment in the biblical narrative. These chapters mark the Noahic Covenant. The Noahic covenant is the second time that God has made a promise among himself and mankind. First in the garden of Eden, we see that God’s covenant with man was to not eat from the tree of Good and Evil. However, that covenant was broken so God made a plan to restore mankind to himself fully like they were in the beginning (Genesis 3:15). This is where the Noahic Covenant builds upon God’s first promises to restore mankind to himself. The Noahic Covenant is a general promise to all of mankind that is given to Noah. Genesis 9:11 says, “I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.” God knew for him to carry out his plan of restoration he would not be able to destroy the earth like what happened during the flood. So, he makes a promise to Noah that he will never wipe the earth out again by a flood.
This general promise has been given to all of mankind through Noah and is one that we can hold onto today. Even though the world looks chaotic and the are many uncertainties that we navigate through daily. God has given a promise to us all that never again will he destroy the world with a flood.
