God is King

Hosea 9:1-9

Sometimes it’s hard to see how God is both a God of love and one of justice. We want to embrace the aspects of God that are seen as positive.. His love, redemption, patience. But how often do we also embrace his justice and wrath? Because he is God, he has full authority over all. Not only is he a Father, but he is also a King.

In this passage we see God’s justice and authority as a King. He has seen the continuous idolatry of Israel and how is going to punish them as a result. They receive this punishment in their harvest of grains (V2), no more feasts or good wine (V3-4), and more are described past verse 9. It’s easy to look at Israel and think… dang they REALLY messed up.

What we need to understand is that Israel’s continuous sin in and through idolatry has not only affected their generation, but generations to follow. Their sin has put up a wall between them and God. That’s why the Gospel is so glorious, because it breaks down the wall and instead builds a bridge directly to God. We have to remember that in the book of Hosea, WE ARE ISRAEL. We have sought idols and acceptance from things other than God. We have desired other things that are not God, we have sinned against the most High King. His wrath against sin is justified because nothing sinful can be in heaven. Although, we get to live in the reconciliation and redemption of the cross. We have the opportunity to repent and turn away from sin.

Is it hard for you to see God as a King and authority? What beauty can we find in his punishment or justice? What is hard to believe?
