The Fleeting things of this World

Hosea 9:10-17

At one point, Israel was doing reallllllyyy well. Obedient and living in the fruits of their labor. They had been receiving unexpected blessings and they were faithful as well as acceptable. As we continue in this chapter we see that is no longer the case. Continuing from yesterday, the punishment Israel is receiving is not just affecting the current generation, but generations to come.

They are understanding that the idols they worshipped cannot reverse the wrath and punishment of God. The things they have on a high throne in their lives do not compare to the glory and majesty of God. The things that once brought them comfort and a sense of security have resulted in deeper depravity. Can you think of something in your life that may have the same result? It satisfies something in the moment but for the long haul does not and cannot satisfy.

In reading this, we know the only thing that can satisfy us. Jesus has come to restore and redeem. He is the living water as described in John 4.

Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

We have to choose to remember that the things we think will satisfy in this world are fleeting, but Jesus and his death and resurrection on the cross have changed eternity. Choosing him as the thing that will satisfy affects everything we do.
