And Those Who Hear Will Live
John 5:25-32
One of the most beautiful mysteries of the gospel is that it has implications for our past, present, and future.
In the verse just before our passage today, John 5:24, Jesus says, "whoever hears My word and believes He who sent Him has eternal life, he does not come into judgment but has passed from death to life” (bold added for emphasis).
Then, in verse 25, Jesus says, “an hour is coming and is now here… and those who hear will live.
Jesus gave life, gives life, and will give life to our spiritual deadness. He will resurrect us in our physical deadness. How can this be? The Father has granted Jesus to have life in Himself. Because Jesus is God in the flesh, His essence is life.
We know the only one who can resurrect our past, present, and future.
Not only is Jesus life, but He has the authority and power to give life. At the judgment, Jesus will give eternal life to those who have clung to Him. Jesus is the just Judge who will give justice based on the will of God, who sent Him.
Remember, God’s will is not to condemn. It is to save and give life. Recall John 3:17, “ For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”
The justice we deserve is separation from the God of life because we were dead in sin. But Jesus is life, and He has given life to our past, present, and future by His sacrifice on the cross and resurrection on our behalf.
Our past sin has passed away. Jesus’ life-giving spirit empowers our present. Our future is resurrection.
Meditate on how Jesus gives life to your past, present, and future. Is there any wound, sin, or brokenness you desire Jesus to heal? Bring that to Him in prayer. He has the authority to give life to it. Even if it doesn’t see healing now, it will indeed be healed at the resurrection.
