He Is the Way
John 14:1-6
Jesus claims that He is “the way, the truth, and the life” and that “no one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). These claims are an assurance to His disciples and to us that we have an immovable connection to our Father.
Jesus begins this interaction with, “Do not let your hearts be troubled.” Jesus could perceive that His disciples were experiencing anxiety because He had just told them, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.”(John 13:26).
Jesus comforted them, telling them they would be reunited with the Father. They didn’t need to fear because Jesus would keep his promise to be with them. He will take them back to be with Him.
Yet, Thomas was still fearful that He wouldn’t know “the way” because He didn’t know where Jesus was going.
Jesus reassures Him again. I imagine Jesus leaning over to Thomas as He says, “I am the way…”
Jesus tells His disciples, “If you know me, don’t worry; you know the way. Don’t worry, you know the truth. Don’t worry, you know life. You don’t need to fear what is going to happen. You don’t need to fear separation from God anymore.”
If you are Jesus’ disciple, you too can trust Jesus will keep His promise to prepare a place for you in eternity with God. You don’t need to fear that God will abandon you. You have an assurance of your salvation and a permanent relationship with God because Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. If you know Him, you are secure.
When we fear abandonment, it can be tempting to grasp onto things that aren’t secure. Maybe you believe the lie that you aren’t loved, so you grasp onto the attention of others. Maybe you grasp onto a way of living that provides temporary satisfaction but no eternal significance.
But if Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, we don’t need to fear abandonment. Jesus is preparing a place for us and will be with us until we arrive. We can live in security because Christ hasn’t just made a way. He is the way.
What do you think and feel about meditating on our security in Christ? How is the Spirit leading you to respond to the truth that Jesus is “the way, the truth, and the life.”
