Leaders of the Bible: Jesus
Philippians 2:5-11, Matthew 11:25-27
How do we even begin to explain Jesus and his leadership in the world as we read through the text? We can talk about how Jesus was level-headed amongst a LOT of rebellion, angst, or confusion. He wasn’t shameful, but he was clear. He met people where they were at, yet called them to something greater than themselves. He invested in those around him, and bore the fruits of the Spirit. I could go on and on, although I think the mark of Jesus’ leadership was not the miracles he performed but his humility before God.
Jesus was still obedient to God the Father, even to the point of death. That’s why the humanness of Jesus is vital to our relationship with God - God knows every form of the human experience. Not only because he created it, but because He lived it too. Now, try not to get too lost in the mystery of the trinity, but understand that Jesus came to this earth and emptied himself to serve us and save us (Philippians 2:6). He was never above us or off in the distance. He wasn’t a God removed from our circumstances but immersed himself into the world that He created.
This humility should call into question our own - what do we think we deserve just because we received the status of a leader? It is an honor to be the one making decisions or shepherding others, not one that you are entitled to. Jesus, who was perfect and did not deserve the cross, took it willingly, because He knew that’s what needed to be done.
