A Song to our King

Psalm 45

How often is our worship aligned with God’s character? Our worship can often be reactive; something happens in our lives that leads to worship. What do we know about God that helps our worship be proactive or consistent? It’s about His character. The Sons of Korah (who most likely served by playing music in the temple) were able to not only articulate this in Psalm 45, but did so in a way that was poetic and allegorical. This psalm, we can assume, is written for a Jewish king who is set to be married, but obviously points to our God, who is King. The love described is adoration and awe.

If you were to write a love letter to someone, would you only talk about what they do for you? Or the ways they make you feel? You would want to express who they are in your eyes, what you admire about them, and celebrate their character. This is what is described here.

The poet describes that God is MAJESTIC - He pursues righteousness, meekness, and truth. (V4).

The poet describes that God is POWERFUL - All other kings and rulers fall short to his arrows of justice (V5).

The poet describes that God is EVERLASTING - God will continue to reign forever and ever (V6).

The poet describes that God is RIGHTEOUS - He cannot sin, which means that he cannot sin against us (V7).

From this psalm, we are reminded of the perfect King we belong to. In HIS grace, we are set free. In HIS grace, we are made righteous. Our worship, adoration, and awe should point to who God is, not simply what He has done for us.
