Psalm 90

Psalm 90, 2 Corinthians 4:16-17, Genesis 2:7

I think one thing we can take away from scripture is that our timeline is not God’s timeline. If we go even deeper, our perspective of time is WAY smaller than God’s. God’s perspective is eternal and stretches farther than we can even fathom (2 Corinthians 4:16-17). Often the apostle Paul (as stated in the previous verse) was looking through the lens of intense suffering. The momentary pain he experienced was nothing compared to the freedom he would experience on the other side of heaven.

Psalm 90, was the only Psalm written by Moses, specifically in the wilderness of Canaan (Blue Letter Bible, Guzik). As Moses reflects after experiencing a lot of death and pain, he puts his mindset on eternal things. How before the earth was made, there was God. And when we step into glory, there will be God. God is everlasting to everlasting. He never runs out or falls short. This eternal perspective is once again shown in verse 3 when it states “You return man to dust” which is a connection to the creation of Adam in Genesis 2:7. We see it again in James 4:14 when it says, “yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes”.

Our time on earth is little but it is never meant to be wasted. My prayer is that this does not spark anxiety in you; that you are counting down the days, feel as though you aren’t doing enough, or feel shame for carrying worry. But instead, the hope of this psalm is that the presence of an everlasting God brings peace to your presence, purpose, and identity. That you are a child of God and one that the Father cares deeply about.

Ask yourself these questions as you reflect on eternity;

  • In moments of stress or worry, what is your natural perspective? Are you more tempted to look at momentary worries? Or carry a perspective of eternity?

  • How can you make a decision this week that points towards eternity?
