Psalm 104

Psalm 104, Genesis 1: 29-131

Have you ever seen REI’s campaign during the Holiday season? On Thanksgiving (specifically Black Friday), they have a campaign called OptOutside. On this day all employees are encouraged to not work, get outside, and enjoy the world for what it is. Now, REI didn’t have Psalm 104 in mind (at least not that I know of), but I think this Psalm is one that points directly to the majesty of God’s creation. How easy is it to be consumed by the things of this earth? The materials we have, the things we want, the things we don’t have… It can remove us from the things that we are so immensely blessed with. I have fallen into this so many times! But Psalm 104 is one of reflection. Diving deep into God’s intention of creating the world; the hills, valleys, rivers, the moon, the universe is all under His authority. He created the earth in His image, and Psalm 104 goes into detail of how God built it and built it well. Genesis 1:31 says that God saw everything he made “and behold, it was very good.” We can look to the earth to remind us of who God is.

What we can learn and remember from this passage is:

  1. That God is intentional with His creation.

  2. That God is perfect in His creation

  3. His creation proclaims His glory.

Our world is based on the very things God created. We are under His authority, even when we don’t recognize it. So today, as you may look at the material possessions or things you have/want, take a moment to look outside and see what you have already been given, without anything to earn. God’s gift in creation proclaims His greatness. Like an artist with many paintings, we can see the skills of the artist just by observing His work.

Reflect on these questions;

  1. What verse stood out to you when you read this Psalm?

  2. What is this Psalm prompting you to believe about God?
