Psalm 16
Psalm 16, Ephesians 1:7-10, Philippians 4:11-13
Safety and security are one of our essential needs. When you look at Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, it comes right after food, water, warmth and rest. Safety and security are required in order for us to thrive as humans. However, in a fallen world, security can seem hard to find. Think about how the pandemic affected our sense of security - we could no longer go to the store without a mask, we couldn’t gather in groups for fear of spreading/contracting the virus, we couldn’t even rely on our jobs being there the next day. These last few years have ROCKED our sense of security, but what this Psalm is reminding us of is that our security doesn’t rest in this world.
Our Heavenly Father has unlimited power. He is always with us. He is the great king, the loving Father and the dearest friend. When our security is shaken and our bank account is at zero, or our job is on the line, or we can’t grocery shop without fear, we can rest safely in the arms of the Lord.
Because of Christ we have been adopted into the family, we can never be separated from His love. I love what David Mathis says about this, “God is able to save us from the fears that threaten us, not only by intervening to guard us from harm’s way, but also by guiding us out of trouble. Knowing God as our Savior — both as refuge and counselor — inspires confidence that, come what may, we have a resource beyond compare. But he is not only our utterly reliable Savior. He is also our sovereign Lord.”
God has complete control over our lives and our futures, what a joy! When we rest in the knowledge that we are held secure by an all mighty, all knowing, compassionate, loving, kind and empathetic creator, we need not be afraid of what’s to come. We can rejoice as our flesh rests secure in the arms of Christ. What a beautiful inheritance indeed.
